Seven Pakistani universities have made it to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2016-2017 (THEWUR). THEWUR lists the 980 top universities in the world.

COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Islamabad, has ranked No 1 in Pakistan, leaving NUST behind.

THEWUR is the only global university performance table to judge world-class universities across all of their core missions – teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.

These seven top Pakistani universities are:

  1. COMSATS Institute of Information Technology, Islamabad
  2. National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST), Islamabad
  3. Quaid-i-azam University (QAU), Islamabad
  4. University of Agriculture (UAF), Faisalabad
  5. Bahauddin Zakariya University (BZU), Multan
  6. University of Karachi (UoK)
  7. University of Lahore (UoL)

First three Pakistani universities are ranked in the 601-800 table. The last four are in the 801+ table.

Capital city Islamabad has stood out with three top universities in Pakistan while Karachi, Lahore, Multan and Faisalabad each get one mention.

In Asia, National University of Singapore (NUS) has ranked No 1.

Universities from China, Japan, Hong Kong and South Korea, besides Singapore, have made it to world top 100.

31 Indian universities are included the top world 980 ranking.

It is the first time that a university from outside the United States has topped the table.

United Kingdom and Germany follow with 32 and 22 top universities respectively in the top 200 list.

Asian countries lag behind their European and American counterparts. But it won’t take long before China and others could catch up.
