LONDON: Britain’s Respect party leader and MP from Bradford West George Galloway has lost his seat to Naz Shah, a Pakistani origin candidate of Labour Party. She hails from Mirpur, Azad Kashmir.
Nine MPs of Pakistani origin have been elected in UK’s General Elections.
Prime Minister David Cameron’s Conservative Party has emerged victorious.
Labour leader Miliband has conceded defeat. All three opposition party leaders have quit.
Reacting over the election results, Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s London Secretariat termed Galloway’s defeat as an end of his “politics of hatred”. Naz won by over 11,000 votes.
The MQM also congratulated wining candidate Naz Shah in a statement issued on Friday.
On Galloway, The Independent newspaper headlined: George Galloway’s dirty battle in bid for Bradford West seat.
The Guardian piece on Naz Shah. Very moving!
In another interesting development, the SNP’s Alison Thewliss has won the Glasgow Central seat from Labour’s Anas Sarwar, son of former Punjab Governor Mohammad Sarwar.
Anas Sarwar was MP for the area since 2010. Anas lost by 8,000 votes. UK wing of PMLN supported the SNP candidate.
Anas’s father Mohammad Sarwar was the UK’s first ever Muslim MP. Sarwar became Governor in the Punjab province when PMLN won Pakistan elections in 2013. Earlier this year, he left PMLN and joined opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).
